Kaitlyn & Jake - Watagans Pine Forrest Engagement Session

Romantic Picnic at the Pines, Martinsville

Kaitlyn and Jake are truly an awesome couple, and there's no doubt that they are 100% made for each other. They're like the perfect match—almost like bread and butter, hot chips and tomato sauce, or in this case, an afternoon picnic with cheese and wine in the stunning Watagan State Forest.

When we first began planning Kaitlyn and Jake's engagement photo shoot, we knew it had to be something special, something that would reflect their unique connection. As a couple who loves a good picnic and exploring new places, it didn’t take long for us to settle on The Pines picnic area in the Watagan State Forest. It’s one of those hidden gems that offers the best of both worlds—a beautiful spot for a bush walk and a picturesque location for a cozy picnic. The way the afternoon light streams through the towering trees is nothing short of magical, and as a photographer, I think it’s the kind of setting that dreams are made of.

Kaitlyn, with her impeccable sense of style, set up a charming little picnic spread. The blanket was laid out just so, with a selection of cheeses, fresh fruits, and of course, a few drinks to celebrate the occasion. Everything was perfectly arranged, and the scene was set for what promised to be an unforgettable afternoon. They were just starting to enjoy their spread when a cheeky bush turkey decided to crash the party, helping itself to a few treats. It was one of those unexpected moments that added a touch of humour and made the day even more memorable.

As the afternoon unfolded, it became clear that Kaitlyn and Jake were naturals in front of the camera. While I often have a few couples poses up my sleeve, these two didn’t need much direction. They were in their element, completely at ease, and genuinely enjoying each other’s company. The way they laughed together, shared secret smiles and embraced the moment was pure magic. They knew that the most important thing was to have fun and be themselves, and that’s exactly what they did. Their love for each other was so evident, and it was a joy to capture it on camera.

We spent the rest of the afternoon wandering through the forest, talking about everything and anything. It was one of those easy, relaxed conversations that flow naturally when you’re with good company. By the end of the shoot, it felt like we’d known each other for years. Kaitlyn and Jake have a way of making you feel like you’re part of their world, and it was such a privilege to be part of this special moment in their journey together.

These legends are set to tie the knot this year at the beautiful Heaven Gardens in Salt Ash for what promises to be a stunning Port Stephens wedding. If their engagement shoot was any indication, their big day is going to be nothing short of spectacular. I can already picture the laughter, the joy, and all the awesome moments that are sure to unfold. I’m counting down the days until I get to capture Kaitlyn and Jake as they say "I do," surrounded by their loved ones in such a breathtaking setting.

It’s couples like Kaitlyn and Jake that remind me why I love what I do. Their love story is one for the ages, and I can’t wait to see where their journey takes them next.

Need some ideas for your engagement session that aren’t boring? Here are a few of my favourite ideas:

1. Recreate Your First Date:
Why not go back to where it all started? Whether it was a cozy coffee shop, a cute park, or even a quirky little bookstore, revisiting the spot where your love story began can add a sentimental touch to your photos. Plus, it’s a great excuse to relive those first-date vibes and maybe even laugh about those early nerves!

2. Take a Day Trip:
If you two love a good adventure, why not turn your engagement session into a mini getaway? Pick a spot you’ve been wanting to explore—whether it’s a quaint little town, a secluded beach, or a scenic forest. Spend the day wandering around, trying new things, and just enjoying each other’s company. A change of scenery and a laid-back vibe will make for some really genuine and candid shots.

3. Get Moving:
If staying active together is your thing, why not bring that into your session? Whether it’s paddleboarding on a lake, hiking to a stunning lookout, or even just biking through your favorite neighborhood, you’ll get some amazing photos while doing something you love together. Plus, it’s a great way to keep things fun and relaxed!

4. Home Is Where the Heart Is:
Sometimes, the best place for an engagement session is right at home. There’s something super cozy and intimate about capturing the little everyday moments in your own space. Whether you’re making breakfast together, cuddling on the couch with your pets, or even having a playful pillow fight, these moments can make for some seriously heartwarming photos.

5. Share Your Passions:
Do you both have a hobby or passion you love to do together, like cooking, painting, or playing music? Incorporate that into your session! Whether it’s whipping up a meal in the kitchen, painting a canvas, or jamming out on your instruments, these personal touches can make your photos feel even more special.

6. Embrace the Season:
Take advantage of the season you’re in and let it inspire your session. If it’s fall, find a spot with beautiful leaves and bring along a cozy blanket and some hot chocolate. In winter, think snowy landscapes and snuggling up in warm sweaters. Spring and summer bring colorful flowers and sunny days—perfect for a garden picnic or a day at the beach.

7. Keep It Playful:
Most importantly, remember that this is all about celebrating your love and the fun you have together. Bring out the board games, have a water balloon fight, or hit up a local fair. Whatever makes you laugh and feel like yourselves is going to shine through in your photos.

The bottom line is that your engagement session should be a reflection of who you are as a couple. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and do something that feels true to you. Whether it’s a big adventure or a chill day together, the most important thing is that you’re having a blast and being yourselves. Those are the moments that really capture your love story!
